Canadian Citizenship
To become a Canadian citizen:
- You must have lived in Canada for at least three years in the past four years before applying.
- You need to be able to speak one of these two languages well enough to communicate with people.
- You must know the rights and responsibilities of citizens. You must also know some things about Canada’s history and geography, and about its political system.
As a Canadian citizen, you will have the right to:
- be candidates in elections;
- be educated in either official language (English or French);
- apply for a Canadian passport;
- vote in federal and provincial or territorial elections; and
- enter and leave Canada freely.
